The Aquidneck Land Trust was founded in 1990 to preserve Aquidneck Island's natural character and open space for the lasting benefit of the community. The Trust has protected 1,104 acres to date in the island. Their goals include permanently preserving open space through acquiring land and development rights, supporting agriculture, preserving scenic open space, and protecting water supplies. Oakland Farm, an old-growth American Beech forest about two miles from Raytheon, was one of the first areas they were able to preserve.

Anne Garnett, their Executive Director, and John Thalmann, their Director of Operations, will present their goals, activities and successes in a lunch-time talk on Thursday, February 24, at noon in the Business Development Conference Room, second floor near the main lobby.

Both representatives from the Aquidneck Land Trust have a bad case of the flu, and we will have to reschedule the February 24 presentation. Please watch for a new date in March.

What an impressive accomplishment - over 1,100 acres of Aquidneck Island land protected by conservation status. Ted Clement told us about the Aquidneck Land Trust and its goals of land acquiring land and protecting land through conservation easements, followed by stewardship to ensure preservation.
