Sadly, jack-in-the-pulpit and Lady's Slipper no longer exist on the Island. Last year I decided the old family farm cemeteries were in too much danger from time and vandalism, so I began photographing all the stones. I began in Portsmouth and have just under 400 photos to this time. The RI Cemetery Database has a cemetery listed as PO019 Town Farm lot, Portsmouth, West Main Rd and the locator is pole #161. Is this the same cemetery where Job Lawton's stone is located? I spend at least 6 mos. a year in Middletown and would like to photograph this cemetery. I am NOT doing this for money. It will eventually be on the USGENWEB site, either in the RI Reading Room or the Newport Reading Room, free for all genealogists to see. Please contact me about the possibility of meeting someone from your group who could provide me with permission and trail maps to the cemetery. Your website is wonderful, the photography magnificent, and I am considering not waiting until May, but coming early for the April 20 function! Thanks so much for your work. Name: Frederick Roy Lawton Email:[email protected] Location: Somerset, MA USA Date: Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at 19:18:26 Comments: I have recently discovered that George Lawton of early Portsmouth fame was my Great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-Grandfather. And of course I'm related as well to his brother Thomas. Your web site really helps me to see history as well as preservation. But exactly how can I access the actual site rather than the web site? The click-on-pictures didn't get bigger, I only got an error message. But I am so grateful for what I've seen, and I am glad that there are dedicated people who can help preserve a natural spot as well as the human side as the people are also part of the natural ecology. I would be thrilled to be able to know how and when anyone could visit this area without disturbing the area or running into industrial, commercial, public, or private property. Where should one park and are there maps to find the grave site and the mill site and the brook, etc. I have driven by this area in the past and never knew my ancestry was there. Thanks so much for the contribution. Name: Carrie Tucker Email:[email protected] MA USA Date: Sunday, March 3, 2002 at 19:49:17 Comments: Wonderful site; very worthy endeavor in terms of both history and ecology. I learned of your site because the Poorhouse Lady posted a message on a genealogy board dedicated to Rhode Island. I am an amateur genealogist. My husband's ancestor is Atwell Tucker, resident manager of the Portsmouth Poor Farm for many years, beginning in 1900. He was the last of a long line of well-documented Rhode Island farmers, and farmed the property. I have a good bit of information on Atwell, as well as a photo of his son Claude and dog at the Portsmouth Poor Farm. Atwell and his wife Mary raised 2 sons on that farm. I am very interested in learning what Atwell's role was there and perhaps seeing any photos of him or the farm during his era. Perhaps we could exchange information? My email address is [email protected] . Hope i hear from you! Sincerely, Carrie Tucker PS Is the Portsmouth Poor Farm and the Portsmouth Asylum one and the same? They were between the parking lot to the Nimitz Blg (South Entrance) and the Crabapple Trail. They wandered along the grass for a while and then turned onto the trail. I also wanted to give the group a belated thanks for the Earth Day activities and the beautiful walking trails you've created! My son built a birdhouse (#14, right where the deer were this morning) and had a great time last year. We'll be back for Earth Day 2002. Thanks for all of your hard work. I have been tasked with adding citizen based environmental monitoring efforts to a statewide database. During this search my search for programs I came across the REWHC website. The site is VERY impressive and I wanted to learn more to see if this is something that ought to be included in this database. I would appreciate receiving a phone call from someone regarding this program as soon as possible. I'm afraid that I am on a rather tight deadline, having to complete my portion of the database for Monday June 11th in the morning. I may be reached at 401-874-4552. I would love to see wildlife, flora and fauna encouraged everywhere. YAHOO, all of you! I noted that you have interpretive signs on your trails-I recently applied for a small Earth Day grant to erect a small interpretation of the 1st completed saltmarsh restoration in RI, on site. I am hoping you would share your resources with us( CFPIA).I can draft the text and photos, but making it weatherproof, watertight, and UV protected has me searching for a solution. I have been unable to find anyone locally to help me create a sign like this. thanks for any and all advice. Lawton Email:[email protected] Location: Phoenix, AZ U.S.A. and Canada Date: Monday, January 15, 2001 at 22:58:58 Comments: Like another of the visitors, I'm a descendant of Thomas Lawton who discovered relatively recently the rich history of the Lawtons in the Portsmouth area. The historical archaeology of the late James Deetz (http://www.virginia.edu/~anthro/deetz.html) always fascinated me. While at Brown, he'd consulted on the Plimouth Colony recreation; he also particated in the achaelogical deconstruction of the Mott home in Portsmouth. Fascinating work. I'm delighted that Raytheon's group is dedicated to the preservation of the natural and historical facets of this area. What particularly intrigued me during the two visits I've made were the remaining "enclosures" of land that dot the island rural areas. Original villagers seemed to live in town and enclose their fields in the English style. It would be marvellous if some of that "original" landscape could be restored; if a supervised "dig" could be carried out at the Lawton mill site, etc. It strikes me that Portsmouth -- with it's history involving Anne Hutchinson (http://www2.pitnet.net/primarysources/hutchinson.html gives a transcript of her trial in Boston before leading the foundation of Portsmouth)has tremendous appeal. Thanks for your excellent site and fine work. Name:Stephen B. I think it was a valuable opportunity for the kids, not only for learning, but to see that a company like Raytheon has such environmental interests at heart. Harry was a terrific guide. You both seem to love your work, which is always a wonderful thing for kids to witness. And of course, they love having their pictures taken. Jack and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and hope to repeat the experience, perhaps in the spring. I just saw a full grown buck on the east side of building 2 running from north to south. This is the side of the building between the west main and the building. Apparently he came out of the woods by the front gate and ran along the building going into the woods at south end of the building. He was about 6 foot to the top of his head and had an additional 1 foot in height from small antlers. The sighting was at 1:30 pm on 12/5. P.s. It is very unclear what the best way to send you this info is. You've got to love software, there is always something else to do.
