Committal Letters From The Book of Registry

  The following are facsimiles of small notes which likely accompanied an inmate to the asylum signed by Seth R. Anthony. They were found pasted into the Portsmouth Asylum Book of Registry, 1849-1882, found at the Rhode Island Historical Society.
Portsmouth June 5/67
Mr George Cornell Keeper of the Asylum,
Please keep this woman & child that Mr. W. Gefford, the bearer of this Brings you by my order.

Mr Georg Cornell
Keeper of the Asylum,
You must take Amy Jane Sisson an her boy as inmates of the asylum.

I send this by the Bearer as he says he wants a home therefore you must except him as an inmate at Present.

Please let Mr Abel Sherman take Eta Sherman, as he thinks of taking her to bring up. I think it will be a good place for her if she suits..

I send you John Arnoto as a Pauper. You must take care of him a few days as I shall send immediately for the overseer of the poor of North Kingston to come and take him away as the law provides..
