Idiotic, Deaf and Dumb and Blind 1 Although the objects of my appointment does not embrace subjects of inquiry, that come under these heads, save so far as they are subjects of pauperism, I thought that as the statistics of the whole could be readily obtained with a very trifling additional expense, I would embody them in this report. By the returns of the late census, it appears that there are exclusive of paupers, 82 Idiotic and Imbecile persons in the State, which, added to the 54 pauper Imbeciles, as exhibited in the statements of my returns from the poor houses and Asylums, makes the total number in the State, 136 persons in all. By the same respective returns, it appears that there are 48 Blind persons in the State, exclusive of paupers making a total with the addition of 12 paupers, of 60 persons in all, exclusive of 7 pupils at the Perkins Institution. By the same returns, there appears to be in the State, 59 Deaf mutes, exclusive of paupers making a total, with the addition of 5 paupers, of 64 persons in all, exclusive of 6 pupils at the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb. By these returns it appears that the relative number of Insane paupers and all other Insane persons in the State, are as About - 1 pauper to 1 of all others. Idiotic, 1 pauper to 1½ of all others. Blind, 1 pauper to 4 of all others. Deaf and Dumb, 1 pauper to 13 of all others. If these results are sufficiently conclusive to establish a general rule, it appears that the tendency of the terrible malady of Insanity to pauperism is 13 times greater than that of Deafness 4 times greater than that of Blindness, and 50 percent greater than that of Idiocy; an interesting fact, if really proved to be so.
